El servicio se inició como una prueba comercial piloto en la ciudad de Alicante en 2001 y posteriormente se extendió a algunas ciudades importantes como Madrid y Barcelona en abril de 2004[1] En 2013, Movistar Imagenio pasó a llamarse Movistar TV.
A partir de marzo de 2006, la cobertura llega a toda España. Se cubren las principales ciudades y capitales de provincia, pero no las zonas rurales ni las ciudades menores. Los usuarios pueden comprobar en línea si el servicio está disponible para su línea telefónica en la página web de Movistar.
La oferta de canales incluye algunos canales internacionales en inglés, como CNN International y BBC World News. Además, en algunos canales, Movistar TV permite pasar al instante de la versión doblada en español de los programas extranjeros a la versión original. Esta facilidad está disponible para muchos canales digitales como TCM, Calle 13, FOX y Disney Channel, pero no para los canales nacionales terrestres/digitales como TVE, Antena3 o Telecinco.
La plataforma de Movistar TV (entonces llamada Imagenio) está impulsada por Alcatel-Lucent (antes Lucent Technologies) desde 2006. Anteriormente, la plataforma Imagenio era un desarrollo propio de Telefónica I+D (la rama de I+D de Telefónica). En 2006, César Alierta (consejero delegado de Telefónica) firmó un acuerdo con Patricia Russo (consejera delegada de Lucent Technologies en ese momento) para la transferencia de la tecnología base de Imagenio.
